It is situated along the St. Johns River about 20 miles southwest of Daytona Beach and 12 miles east of Deland. The history of Debary, Florida dates back to the mid-1800s when the first settlers arrived in the area. The town was originally known as DeBary which was named after its first settler, Samuel Frederick DeBary who moved here from New York in 1871. He purchased a large tract of land and began to develop it into an agricultural community.
In 1876, a post office was established and DeBary became an official town. The population steadily grew over the years and by 1910 it had reached 1,000 residents. In that same year, a railroad line was built connecting DeBary to Sanford which brought even more people to the area.
