It was founded in 1717 and has a long history of being an important economic center for the region. The town was originally known as “Rappahannock,” after the Rappahannock Indian Tribe who had inhabited the area prior to European settlement.
The earliest settlers of Cheswold were English Quakers who began arriving in the late 1600s. One of the earliest records of settlement dates back to 1676 when Thomas Wilson purchased land that had been deeded to him by William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. The first church in Cheswold was built in 1732 and was called Bethel Presbyterian Church.
In 1775, Cheswold became an important military post during the American Revolution. General George Washington and his troops camped nearby at Appoquinimink Creek while planning their attack on British forces at nearby Dover. Afterward, Cheswold served as a major supply depot for both sides during the war effort.
The town grew steadily over time and by 1820 it had become an important commercial center for farmers in Kent County with its numerous mills, stores, and businesses that served local farmers’ needs such as blacksmiths and wheelwrights. In 1845, a railroad line opened between Wilmington and Dover which helped to further stimulate Cheswold’s economy as many goods could now be transported quickly throughout Delaware and into Maryland.
The Civil War brought significant changes to life in Cheswold with many men enlisting to fight for either side or volunteering as nurses or cooks at nearby hospitals established by both armies during this conflict. Following the war, there was a period of tremendous growth with new businesses opening up throughout town such as banks, hotels, restaurants, theaters, stores etc., which helped make Cheswold one of Kent County’s most prosperous towns throughout much of the 19th century.
In recent years, Cheswold has become known for its historic downtown area which features several buildings that date back to colonial times including several homes from this era that are listed on National Register Historic Places list.
