Google Continues to Drive The Standard RCS to Compete against WhatsApp and Begins to Reach Europe

Already a year Google and the GSMA allied to drive new standard messaging RCS the landing began to take place at the end of last year, but very discreetly and its launch is being very staggered.

The RCS standard is the potential rival of WhatsApp, Since this successor of SMS and MMS allows you to send messages enriched as GIFs, images, videos, stickers, notes voice, locations, messages to groups and see which messages have been read through the Google Messenger application as if WhatsApp.

So far only Google-driven RCS standard was available for us operator Sprint users and Canadian operator Rogers users, but today Google has given an important boost to messages enriched with your partner Telenor.

The operator Telenor based in Norway has announced that its networks already support rich RCS messages in all countries where it operates. This means that the standard RCS opens in Europe and Asia thanks to the more than 214 million customers that the company has distributed in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Pakistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia and India.

Operators that opt for the standard RCS

In agreement with the GSMA are are operators who announced during the next few months they would support the new RCS standard of Google:

  • América Móvil
  • Bharti Airtel Ltd
  • Deutsche Telekom
  • Etisalat
  • Globe Telecom
  • KPN
  • Millicom
  • MTN
  • Orange
  • PLAY
  • Smart Communications
  • Sprint (already supported)
  • Telenor Group (already supported)
  • TeliaSonera
  • Telstra
  • TIM
  • Turkcell
  • Rogers (already supported)
  • VimpelCom
  • Vodafone

Moment RCS messages are free, operators are including this new messaging service for free, and it works both on the WiFi network and data network. RCS messages currently have two major problems: not all operators already support this standard and that there is only application for Android. Until not all operators of the world support this standard of fortified posts, and until Apple and Microsoft do not have applications can WhatsApp breathe calm.

The standard RCS like operators because messages pass through their servers with SMS and MMS, thing that it does not happen with WhatsApp messages. And an advantage of this is that if saturated or drops an operator Server users of other operators cannot keep sending and receiving messages.
